Tobacco companies actively promote cigarettes to children in developing countries.
The World Health Organisation predicts that smoking-related deaths will double in Africa over the next 20 years. This issue was brought to the public attention in June 2008 by the BBC2 programme This World: Duncan Bannatyne Takes on Tobacco
Unlike in the UK, people in developing countries often aren’t aware of the dangers of smoking and start smoking at an early age. The sneaky tactics used by tobacco companies who actively target children lead to children starting to smoke at an early age. Across many developing countries you will see children begging for cigarettes from passers by and purchasing single cigarettes instead of sweets. Many of these children are completely unaware that smoking is severely harmful to their health.
The Smoking Kills! CAMPAIGN! aims to educate children in the developing world about the perils of smoking. We are looking for the following support from professionals and corporations:
Medical Professionals to work with educators to help produce a short lesson about the dangers of smoking and its effect on the human body. These lessons will be delivered to children under the age of 10 in Africa so they will need to be easy to understand, fun and interactive.
Teachers / Trainers to give up one or two weeks of their time to travel to Africa, visit schools and teach the children.
Businesses to sponsor individual teachers / trainers by paying for their travelling expenses, accommodation and insurance.
Global Corporations / Government Offices with a presence in Africa to help ensure that our volunteers are well looked after and that these lessons are delivered to the right audiences.
